In Cause We Are Young (《求戀期》, 1997), director Vincent Kok Tak-chiu captures that fleeting, electric moment when youth collides with the bewildering maze of modern romance. It’s not a profound masterpiece, nor does it aim to be. Some jokes feel dated by today’s standards, and the resolution leans comfortably into formula. Yet there’s an undeniable warmth and honesty here, a reminder of why we fall for these stories in the first place. The performances elevate the material: Gigi Lai glows with natural grace, while the male leads bounce off each other with lived-in chemistry that sells the emotional stakes behind the laughs.
