The Big Boss (1971)
Bruce Lee's big screen break came in director Lo Wei's The Big Boss, a wildly successful kung-fu film that made the legendary screen icon into a powerful box-office force! Chang Chow An (Bruce Lee) is a reluctant warrior who promises his mother to leave his violent days behind him. Chang goes to live with his uncle and gets a job at the local ice factory. But something is amiss at the factory. Chang's co-workers begin to mysteriously disappear, and Chang himself is distracted by the evil "Big Boss", who uses power, money and women to direct Chang's attentions elsewhere. But when Chang learns once and for all that the Big Boss is a bad man, it's time to let the dragon out of the bottle! It all comes down to knock-down kung-fu showdowns featuring Bruce Lee's trademark power and charismatic flair! Known to American audiences as Fists of Fury, The Big Boss is required viewing by anyone who considers themself a Bruce Lee fan.
Fist of Fury (1972)
The raw, powerful fighting skills of Bruce Lee have never been so potently portrayed as in Fist of Fury (a.k.a. The Chinese Connection)! This classic tale of a student avenging his master's death rises to higher cinematic levels thanks to its charged setting of 1908 Shanghai, when Japanese-Chinese tensions were at their most explosive. Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee) arrives back in Shanghai to attend the funeral of his master, famed boxer Ho Yuan Chia, founder of the Ching Wu Martial Arts School. Days later, the grieving school receives an anti-Semitic message from the Japanese Association, and Chen Zhen storms over to vent his pent-up fury. His actions spark a power struggle in Shanghai, which is further complicated by the shocking revelation that his master was poisoned! Flying fists and flailing bodies are the result of Chen Zhen's righteous fury in Fist of Fury, an emotional and exhilarating kung-fu drama that showcases Bruce Lee at his absolute best!
The Way of the Dragon (1972)
Known in the west as Return of the Dragon, Bruce Lee's The Way of the Dragon is another classic martial arts film featuring the Dragon at the peak of his powers! Bruce Lee is Tang Lung, a Hong Kong expatriate in Italy who gets the opportunity to use his fists when local thugs begin muscling in on the local Chinese restaurant. It's a simple exchange: the thugs set foot in the restaurant, and Tang Lung cuts loose with a flurry of kicks and punches designed to inflict the maximum amount of damage with the minimum amount of effort. Then, more fighting ensues. The Way of the Dragon co-stars popular starlet Nora Miao, and is a true tour-de-force for Bruce Lee. Not only did he star in the film, but he also wrote, produced, and directed - and this is in addition to his expected action choreography duties. The results of his labor are a wildly entertaining martial arts film that's sure to make kung-fu fans of all ages grin from ear-to-ear. Most famously, The Way of the Dragon features a dramatic showdown between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the confines of Rome's ancient Colosseum!
Game of Death (1978)
Bruce Lee stars as Billy Lo, a burgeoning martial arts star drawn into a web of corruption in Game of Death! On the verge of becoming a martial arts screen star, Billy Lo is approached by an evil group called The Syndicate to join their illicit endeavors. What does Billy do? He cuts loose with a series of high-pitched wails and kung-fu kicks as only Bruce Lee can deliver! Bruce Lee's final film, Game of Death was partially shot before Lee's tragic death, but completed afterwards with a variety of film techniques, including stock footage and the use of a stand-in (Korean actor Kim Tai Jung) to double for the legendary martial artist. But regardless of the hodgepodge filmmaking, Game of Death qualifies as essential cinema for fans of Bruce Lee thanks to numerous fight sequences, and the famous finale featuring Lee in a series of battles, including one against NBA Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar!
