Otomatsu Sato (Ken Takakura) is honest, firm and loyal small-town stationmaster in northern Japan. He spends most of his life on the branch line. Uncommonly faithful, he could not leave his station even when his only daughter died and his beloved wife (Shinobu Otake) died in hospital also. Nevertheless, he can do nothing but stands on the frozen platform under falling snow, as if punishing himself. One day, a strange but lovely little girl appears in front of him on the platform. The doll in her arm somehow catches his attention. After chatting for a while, she leaves like a breeze. it lets him naturally missing his deceased daughter Yukiko (Ryoko Hirosue)....
