Film Review: The Unwavering Brotherhood 紮職3 (2024) - Hong Kong
Reviewed by Andrew Chan (Film Critics Circle of Australia)
“The Unwavering Brotherhood" intentionally revives the essence of classic Hong Kong gangster cinema, evoking memories of iconic sagas like "Young and Dangerous” and “Election”. Directed by Terry Ng Ka Wai and, this 2024 installment marks the third chapter in the “Triad” series.
Michael Tao's magnetic portrayal as the key villain infuses the narrative with a captivating intensity, stealing scenes with his over-the-top performance. The ensemble cast, featuring Bosco Wong, Carlos Chan, Louis Cheung, and the authoritative presence of Mark Cheng as the triad boss, delves deep into the intricate world of loyalty, betrayal, and brotherhood within a gritty underworld setting.
Niki Chow and Angel Lam add a delightful touch to the film, although their roles as mere "flower vases" fail to fully showcase their talents, a missed opportunity in an otherwise compelling narrative.
Despite this, "The Unwavering Brotherhood" successfully channels the spirit of beloved classics, delivering solid performances and a riveting storyline that resonates with enthusiasts of Hong Kong gangster cinema. This film not only pays a moving tribute to the genre but also stirs nostalgia for the heyday of the "Young and Dangerous" series, further enriching its appeal for fans seeking a reminiscent journey through the world of crime and camaraderie.
I rated it 7/10
