Film Review: Customs Frontline (海關戰線) (2024) - Hong Kong / China

Directed by Herman Yau, “Customs Frontline” disappoints with its poor pacing and weak script. Despite the efforts of first-time action director and star Nicholas Tse, the film suffers from a lack of character development and a ridiculous plotline. Director Herman Yau's usually efficient filmmaking is not showcased in this film. The potential chemistry between Jacky Cheung and Karena Lam is wasted, failing to recreate the magic of their previous award-winning collaboration. Francis Ng's special appearance is also underwhelming.

The plot revolves around the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, as officers Chow Ching-lai (Nicholas Tse) and Cheung Wan-nam (Jacky Cheung) uncover illegal weapons on a cargo ship and trace them back to an international conflict. Going undercover, they discover a transnational operation with unexpected connections closer to home. Unfortunately, the film's ridiculous plotline hampers its ability to engage viewers effectively.

Despite attempts to create over-the-top action sequences with long takes, the film fails to deliver due to the lack of character development and a weak script. The pacing feels off, leading to disjointed action scenes that struggle to connect with the overall narrative.

While “Customs Frontline” has visually impressive moments and sporadic excitement, they are overshadowed by its flaws. Ultimately, the film falls short of its potential and fails to provide a satisfying cinematic experience.

I rated it 5.5/10
