In "Hitman," Jet Li shines in a modern setting as he navigates the treacherous world of assassins in his last Hong Kong film before embarking on his path to Hollywood stardom. Directed by Stephen Tung, this 1998 Hong Kong action film delivers some entertaining action sequences blending with 90s Hong Kong comedy.

Li's portrayal of Fu, a skilled yet inexperienced hitman in training, is compelling. The film's innovative camera work by cinematographer Arthur Wong adds depth to the action sequences, enhancing the overall viewing experience. Notably, the choreography by Stephen Tung Wai excels in delivering adrenaline-pumping fight scenes. Particularly the interior lifts sequences and the extended fight scenes in the public estate.

The ensemble cast, including Eric Tsang, Simon Yam, and Gigi Leung, delivers mixed performances, adding layers to their respective characters. Tsang pairs well with Li, meanwhile Yam is wasted in a limited role. Leung tries hard to create romantic interest but the script never fully realise this.

Set in a world where a bounty on a notorious hitman sparks a deadly chase, "Hitman" weaves together elements of mystery, revenge, and betrayal. As the plot unfolds, alliances shift, secrets are revealed, and loyalties are tested, culminating in a predictable finale.

Overall, "Hitman" is a typical Hong Kong action film that showcases Jet Li's prowess in martial arts and struggles in storytelling. With a blend of intense action sequences and some interesting character dynamics, this film keeps viewers engaged for most parts. Not bad farewell to Hollywood - Jet Li’s gift to Hong Kong Cinema, but it can also be better in many ways. (Neo, 2025)
