“Drawing Closer” is a captivating Japanese film that masterfully explores the themes of love and mortality. Directed by Takahiro Miki, the movie follows the journey of Akito Hayasaka (Ren Nagase), a talented artist who discovers he has a year left to live due to a heart tumor. Despite his diagnosis, Akito keeps his condition hidden and meets Haruna Sakurai (Natsuki Deguchi) on a hospital rooftop. Haruna, also an artist, reveals that she has only six months to live. As their connection deepens, the unspoken bond between them becomes a beacon of hope amidst their shared tragedy.

The performances by Nagase and Deguchi are exceptional, delivering heartfelt portrayals of characters grappling with their impending mortality. Their chemistry is palpable, and the film beautifully portrays their blossoming romance against the backdrop of uncertainty and limited time. Miki's direction is remarkable, capturing the raw emotions and inner turmoil of the protagonists with sensitivity and grace.

“Drawing Closer” is visually stunning, with breathtaking cinematography that enhances the emotional impact of the story. The film's exploration of love, expressed through art, is both moving and thought-provoking. It reminds viewers of the preciousness of life and the power of human connection.

Ultimately, “Drawing Closer” stands as a testament to the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. It leaves a lasting impression, prompting introspection and a renewed appreciation for life's fleeting moments. With its compelling narrative, superb performances, and artistic prowess, “Drawing Closer” is an exceptional Japanese film that deserves recognition and praise.

I rated it 9/10
