Rating: ★★★★★★★ 7/10

In "Possession Street" (2024), director Jack Lai crafts a chilling narrative set against the eerie backdrop of an abandoned mall. Shot entirely within this decrepit location, the film immerses viewers in a world where the line between the living and the dead blurs with disturbing consequences.

While the film leans more towards revulsion than terror, there is a surprising undercurrent of dark humor that punctuates the narrative, offering moments of unexpected laughter amidst the chaos. Philip Keung delivers a standout performance as Sam, the video store owner caught in the midst of the zombie outbreak, showcasing his versatility and depth as an actor.

Supported by a capable cast including Candy Wong and Alan Yeung, the film weaves a tale that is more about the undead in Hong Kong than traditional ghostly apparitions. As the characters grapple with the relentless zombie onslaught and the ancient mysteries behind the chaos, the mall transforms into a nightmarish battleground where survival is anything but guaranteed.

"Possession Street" offers a unique take on the horror genre, blending elements of supernatural horror with a distinct Hong Kong flair. While the scares may not always hit the mark, the film succeeds in creating a tense and atmospheric experience that keeps viewers engaged till the very end. (Neo, 2024)
