Film Review: Honey 亲爱的 (2018) - Japan

Yuna Taira stars as the young and naive high school girl whose parents pass away during her younger years. The story is simple, the girl was in love with her uncle who is her guardian, begins to fall in love for real with bad boy Sho Hirano, the naughtiest boy in the school. What makes the film works, ultimately is the affecting romantic pairing and despite all the corniest, it is essentially what a couple in love would be doing, protecting one at all costs and doing things that make one another happy. Ryusei Yokohama and Kaho Mizutani provides able support.

All in all, “Honey” is not a special film, nor does it have any “it” moment that makes it extra special. It is forgettable and probably worth watching for only the fans of the manga series. To see how the pairing go through trial and obstacles can be interesting, but ultimately director Koji Shintoku crumbles to cliches and in reality, nothing of significance really happens.
