Film Review: Inexternal 裡應外合 (2024) - Hong Kong
Rating: ★★★★★★ 6.5/10

"Inexternal" is a film that transports its audience into a fantastical realm where reality blurs with myth, resulting in a dreamlike narrative that both captivates and confounds. Directed by Steven Yuen, this Hong Kong action film offers a unique premise that is as intriguing as it is perplexing.
The story follows Chet (Angus Yeung), a character who finds himself in a coma after a brutal attack, only to awaken in a martial arts world that challenges his very existence. Guided by Sifu Turtle, Chet must master an ancient form of Burmese boxing to confront a formidable villain, whose portrayal by Louis Cheung unfortunately lacks the depth to truly resonate with the audience.
While "Inexternal" boasts some commendable action sequences, the film is marred by excessive editing that detracts from its realism. The pacing feels rushed at times, preventing the narrative from fully immersing the viewer in its otherworldly setting.
The ensemble cast, including Macy Ma, Catherine Chau, and Candice Yu, deliver solid performances that help elevate the film despite its shortcomings. However, it's a shame to see Louis Cheung, a talented actor, underutilized in a role that lacks the emotional depth needed to make the villain truly compelling.
"Inexternal" scores points for its ambitious storytelling and visual flair, drawing viewers into a realm where dreams and myths intertwine to create a tapestry of mystery and wonder. Yet, the film falls short of its full potential, held back by editing choices that hinder its impact.
In the end, "Inexternal" is an interesting and diverting action film that, much like a dream, leaves a lingering impression. With a more refined execution and deeper character development, it could have been a standout entry in the genre. (Neo, 2024)
